Top Ten Tuesday: Book To Movie Adaptions

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  I'm excited to participate; after all, I make lists FOR EVERYTHING!  This week's topic focuses on the best book to movie adaptions.

1.  Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien- These movies were incredible. Between the actors, the scenery and the special effects, I felt all of the movies were really well done. I'm excited for The Hobbit to come out!

2.  Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt- I thought Disney did a good job bringing this book to life and making it attractive to a modern audience. My students not only enjoyed this book, but they loved the movie as well.

3.  Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling- I am a big fan of the series and I thought this movie was one of the better ones. I loved seeing Harry's world come to life.

4.  Emma by Jane Austen- I particularly liked the recent BBC mini-series more than the other versions out there. I thought Romola Garai was the most perfect Emma.

5.  To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee- If you know me, you know that I love this book and the movie. I was lucky to see this movie on the big screen as a child. I won tickets to a revival showing; it was incredible and of course, Gregory Peck was outstanding.

6.  Along Came a Spider by James Patterson- I read this book many years ago and it was definitely a thriller. I thought this movie was equally heart-pounding and what can I say? I am a fan of Morgan Freeman.

7.  The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger- I devoured this book at the beach one summer and I thought Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep portrayed the characters from the novel perfectly.

8.  Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy- I adored both this movie and the novel.  Back in the day, I had a huge crush on Chris O'Donnell; plus, I love Ireland!

9.  Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen- Who isn't a fan of the mini-series with Colin Firth? Loved it! I know a lot of people didn't like the Keira Knightly version, but I am a fan of that one too.

10.  Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton- This book was outstanding, but the movie truly brought it to life. I remember being blown away by this film. To this day, the Velociraptor freaks me out!

So which book to movie adaptions do you love? Did we agree on any of them? Let me know what you think!

  1. Great list! LOTR was my top pick. I loved Pride and Prejudice and Harry Potter too. I agree with you about Romola Garai as Emma. I really enjoyed that version compared to the Gwyneth Paltrow version.

I haven't watched Circle of Friends since I was a teen but I did have a crush on Chris O'Donnell back then too :) That's probably the reason I watched the film. I do remember reading the book but I think I didn't like it as much. I bet if I read it now, I would. I've heard great things about Maeve Binchy's writing.

  2. Oh my gosh! I forgot about the movie Circle of Friends. I so remember going to see that in high school because it had Chris O'Donnell in it! I read the book later in life :)

  3. SO with you on 4 + 8.
I LOOOOOOVED Circle of Friends (the film and the book) and really adored BBC's Emma. Romola was fantastic.

Question: did you like the Circle of Friends book or movie ending better? :)

  4. I can't believe I forgot about Tuck Everlasting! I loved that book so much and read it over and over as a kid. I remember being super excited when the movie was announced and I think the casting was spot on. I may have to go back and rewatch this movie soon.

  6. I wish I had remembered To Kill a Mockingbird...Great book, great film. LotR and HP and the PofA were part of my lists, and I eliminated all Jane Austen adaptations because otherwise there wouldn't have been much room left on my list! Clearly I have to be a new follower now. :)

I'm a fellow beach bum, too. Where in Jamaica do you travel? I loved the Treasure Beach area on the south coast...Anguilla and Grenada are currently tied as my favorite warm weather locales.

  8. Yay for LOTR! The Hobbit should be lots of fun too if it's even half as good as LOTR :D

  10. I really, really like the recent Emma also. I ran out of numbers before I ran out of favorite movie adaptations. Though I love To Kill a Mockingbird, I've never seen the movie. Maybe someday....

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

  12. What a fun topic! The Horatio Hornblower series would have to top my list of great movie adaptations. I watched the series before reading Forester's books, and was disappointed to find out that all my favorite parts of the movies weren't in the original stories! They somehow managed to follow the originals very closely, but add in extra little bits and touches that made the characters so much better!

Gone with the Wind would also be on my list--great movie and great book.

Same goes for The Princess Bride. Both excellent fun!
