Books on the Big Screen (4)

From time to time, I highlight various movies that are coming out based on books.  I've discussed some of the movies coming out in 2012, but what about 2013 and beyond?  There are some great movies based on books coming to a theater near you.  Check them out:

Carrie by Stephen King
From what I've read, Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore are going to be in this film, which is a remake of the original.  It comes out this March.

Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L.James
I may be the only person on the planet who hasn't read this novel. I just can't bring myself to do it, but that's a whole other rant.  Anyway, I haven't heard of a date for this movie, but I know they are trying to figure out who to cast, which apparently causes a heated debate amongst hardcore fans of the novel.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
I am beyond excited to see this one at the theater.  Thankfully, we only have to wait until November.

Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks
I hear that Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel are in this film.  I haven't read this Sparks novel, but I imagine it's chick lit in all of its glory.

Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler
Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) is attached to this film and since it's a 2012 Printz Honor book, I am intrigued. Don't worry! I plan on reading this one before I see the movie.

The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson
I've been meaning to read this one for awhile and will definitely have to before the movie comes out. There's no date attached to this movie yet, but it's rumored that Selena Gomez will play the main character, Lennie.

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
Although I didn't fall in love with this novel like many other people, I will probably watch the movie as I think it might translate well to the big screen.  Some big names have been associated with this film, such as Viola Davis, Jeremy Irons, Emmy Rossum,  and Emma Thompson.  It come out this February.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer
Again, I wasn't a huge fan of this novel, but I'm interested to see how they will portray it.  The movie comes out this March.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
I really enjoyed this novel and am extremely excited to see it on the big screen.  What is even more exciting is the fact that Kate Winslet (love!) will play Julie Ashton.

Divergent by Veronica Roth
I thought Divergent was super entertaining and I know many of my students LOVE this series.  They'll be happy to know that this movie comes out March of 2014.  I don't know if they casted any one yet other than the screenwriter.  Who do you think would make a good Tris?

Also, there are many young adult books that have recently been optioned by entertainment companies and will hopefully *fingers crossed* be made into movies in the next few years.  Here are a few that I've heard about:

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver, Delirium by Lauren Oliver, Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi, and The Diviners by Libba Bray.

Which movie are you most excited for? Let me know what you think!

  1. I think the new version of Carrie will be fun. Chloe Moretz is such a little star! I won't be reading or watching a Fifty Shades movie...

I'll be interested to see what you think of Why we Broke Up. I struggled even reading a couple chapters of it. Could not get into the writing style at all!

    1. I'm glad you liked The Host. I don't know why I couldn't get into it. It should be a good movie though.

  3. I wasn't in love with Beautiful Creatures the book, either. But I am really excited to see the movie. I didn't know that such big stars were in it.

Also, I had no idea that The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was being made into a movie! I loved that book! And Kate Winslet as Julie! Oh my gosh, I can't wait.

  4. AHHHH! I would do a spastic happy dance if The Scorpio Races made it to the big screen, I fell madly in love with that book:) I'm not sure how they're going to bring Fifty Shades to life given that it's so sex-based. I've read a few pieces of it, but what I did read would be hard to put onscreen without an X rating:)

  6. The movie I am most excited about is Catching Fire. I am also glad that the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is finally being made into a film. I think Kate Winslet will be perfect in that part. I can't wait to see who they cast for Dawsey and Isola and the rest.
