Friday Five (19)

Happy Friday! Sometimes I like to talk about what I am currently into that is not necessarily book related. Here's what I have been up to/thinking about/enjoying lately. Let me know what you think!

1.  Broadchurch - When I went to the Sarah Dessen signing last month, she talked a bit about how she watched Broadchurch when she was struggling to write her novel. She highly recommended it and when Sarah Dessen highly recommends something, I listen. So, that week I pulled it up on Netflix and became hooked. It reminded me of a British version of The Killing. It was definitely an edge of your seat show and I can't wait to see season two!

2.  Outlander Finale - I've read the book, so the finale shouldn't have shocked me, but I could barely watch THE scenes if you know what I am talking about. Man, I applaud the actors for completely bringing it and their courage, but wow. From what I saw, it was horrific and cringe-worthy. Ron Moore did not shy away from it at all. He addressed it head on and for that I love him, but it was brutal to watch. I may have hid behind my pillow for most of it. But I am really happy with how they ended season one and I am dying to see season two already. Anyone else still recovering from the finale?

3. Blah Reads - Guys, so far this June I have read some really "blah" reads. I am almost in a reading slump if you will. The last three books I have read were just ok and one was rather disappointing. Don't get me wrong, they weren't bad enough for me to not finish them, but they were just lacking that something special.  What's the last book you read that you LOVED? I needed something to get me out of my slump STAT, so I picked up Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas. I wasn't disappointed!

4. Poldark Blog Tour - Guys, I am so excited for this show coming to PBS and I was asked to be a part of the official blog tour. I will be reviewing the first book in the series, Ross Poldark, next month.  Anyone else looking forward to this show and/or reading the book? I hear it has been successful over in the UK.

5.  Vacation - My family and I are taking a vacation to the shore for some fun in the sunshine. We are going to a different shore town than we usually go to, so I am excited to check it all out.  So, if you see a lot of vacation tweets and Instagram pictures, you'll know what that's all about.

Happy Friday,

  1. I haven't heard of Boardchurch or Poldark but I'm always looking for something good to watch! Yay for vacation! I would love some time near some water and sand this summer - hopefully the time doesn't fly past me before I can do so!

    1. I really enjoyed Broadchurch - you should check it out on Netflix if you like murder mysteries. I hope you get to the beach soon and can relax! Thanks for visiting, Trish!

  2. I saw the first episode of Broadchurch and I liked it but I never did finish watching. I guess there is a US version too called Gracepoint.

I've only watched the first part of Outlander but having read the book I can imagine that season one finale must have been pretty bad to watch in terms of brutality.

I am very excited about Poldark. Is the book good? I saw the books are available to request on Netgalley. I may buy some copies for the library. I've been on a roll with reading this month. I think the books I've really enjoyed were Saint Anything (which you've already read), Beach Town by Mary Kay Andrews and The Coincidence of Coconut Cake. I am currently listening to the audio of The Supreme's at Earl's All You Can Eat and it is laugh out loud funny and sad at the same time. I'm glad you found a book to get you out of your reading slump!

Have fun on your vacation! I am going on vacation next week but it is to see family rather than relaxation.

    1. Broadchurch gets pretty addicting.....and Outlander...oh yes! if you read the book, you know what's coming. It was tough to watch.

I haven't read the book, but I plan to start it soon. I am so excited to check out the show on PBS.

I loved your review of Beach Town...seems like a good beach read and right up my alley. I also will keep my eye out for your review of Supreme's at Earl's All You Can Eat - I love anything that will make me laugh! Have a great weekend, Christina, and enjoy the time with your family!

  3. I can't bring myself to watch Outlander anymore Christina! I loved the first half of the season, but I know what happens in the second half and I just can't deal with it. I just need Jamie and Claire to live in a happy bubble in my head where no one gets beaten or raped. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?! :)

And I've been in a big slump as well Christina! I struggled with Rook and had to set it down eventually. It wasn't bad by any means, it just didn't grab me at all. I've been on a YA break for a little while because nothing was wowing me, and I've had much better luck with some adult reads. I'm picking up Court of Fives this weekend and I have high hopes for that so we'll see!

    1. OMG. I know, Jenny. It was so tough to watch. I am excited for season two though. I so want Jamie and Claire in their bubble as well. You are so right!

I am glad that you felt the same way about Rook. I have been feeling the SAME exact way about YA lately, which sort of breaks my heart. I am reading an adult book now as well. I hope you enjoy Court of Fives and have a great weekend! Thanks for visiting!
