Friday Five (22)

Happy Friday! Sometimes I like to talk about what I am currently into that is not necessarily book related. Here's what I have been up to/thinking about/enjoying lately. Let me know what you think!

1.  Running - This is crazy. For real. Because I only run when I am being chased. But I have gotten back into running. It has been 8+ years since my last REAL run and the first few times weren't pretty. At all. But I just ran the farthest I have ran in years and it felt good. I also bought myself new sneakers, so it's on. I am going to try to keep up with it even though I hate it, because it helps me clear my head and it's one hell of a workout. I feel like my friend Tara from Running and Reading would be proud! :)

Checking out the sharks!
2.  Adventure Aquarium - We took my little guy here for a fun family day and it was a blast. Although it isn't as good (in my humble opinion) as Baltimore's National Aquarium, it was still so much fun. The best part, according to my son, were the hippos and the tube-like shark tank we walked through where sharks were swimming above us.

3.  Homemade Pizza - I love making homemade pizza and Blue Apron had a really good recipe for one:  Summer Corn and Bell Pepper Pizza. My whole family loved it! Any good homemade pizza recipes for me?

4. Reading Slump.....Again - Guys, I have been having bouts of reading slumps all summer. I DNF two books back to back this month so far, because I found them either irritating and/or boring.  Don't get me started about Until Friday Night. I had high hopes for this one, because 1) I am obsessed with football 2) It's compared to Friday Night Lights (which I love!), but wow. I was raging about the sexist behavior during the first 10% of this book. More to come on this later.  So, I returned to my go-to-get-me-out-of-my-reading-slump-series: Sarah J Maas's Throne of Glass series. I just finished book three and thankfully, it has gotten me out of my slump. I've realized that reading books is SO very much like dating. I don't want to waste my time on books that aren't for me.

5.  Suits - My parents are longtime fans of this show and encouraged me to watch it from the beginning since it's on Amazon Instant Video.  So, my hubby and I decided to watch it and we are hooked. We only just started season two, so no spoilers please, but is anyone else a fan? I love me some Harvey.

Happy Friday,

  1. I am not a runner at all (I trip over my own feet) so I applaud you for getting back to it! My sister used this app called Couch to 5K that really helped her when she started out.

I've had some reading slumps too. It sometimes happens and it is frustrating. I liked Until Friday Night when I read it but after reflecting on it I do remember that the guys were jerks in the beginning and while they became nicer they were still kind of controlling. Then again that seems par for the course in this genre. I had major issues with Nowhere But Here by Katie McGarry over that. For some reason it didn't bother me as much with this book or I just didn't read as closely. I am glad you found something to get you out of the slump! I will have to read the Throne of Glass series since I liked A Court of Thorns and Roses.

Looks like the aquarium was a fun trip. Not sure I like the idea of being surrounded by sharks even with glass in between but it would be kind of cool :)

    1. I should totally get that app, Christina, because I used Couch to 5k's guidelines for some of my runs until I was able to run more w/o stopping.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Until Friday Night. I really had a problem with the guys and I am sure I would have gotten past it if I stayed with the book, but I just couldn't do it, so I'm interested in your thoughts on the book as a whole!

Thanks for visiting! I hope you have a great weekend!

  2. YAY!! I AM so proud of you!! I'm also really excited to hear that you found some new shoes; did you get some help with picking them out? Beware...running may lead to an addiction - ha! That pizza looks amazing; I've been saying that I was going to make some homemade pizza and I just haven't done it. I'm so sorry to hear about your reading slump; I just read a really short (192-ish pages), crazy, creepy read called The Beautiful Bureaucrat. It would definitely pull you out of a slump, I think - ha! I hope you have a great weekend, Christina!! Oh, and SUITS!!! Oh, my gosh!!! So good, right?? I could watch it for hours and never get tired...

    1. Thanks, Tara! I can see why running is addictive. I usually feel great afterwards, but getting myself motivated for the run is my problem. haha. Thanks for the recommendation. Will have to check that one out. I am LOVING Suits. I can see why so many people are fans. Have a great weekend!

  4. I just started running for the first time two weeks ago! I hate it, haha. But, it is getting easier (slowly, so slowly, but surely). Yoga is much more enjoyable for me, but I hope the running becomes more fun soon.

I had an awful reading slump the other month! Glad you found something to get you out of it. I've still yet to read anything by Maas!

    1. Me too. I really hate it, but it's such a good workout. I love yoga as well...much more relaxing. I hope you can read something by Maas. If you like fantasy, her novels are great. Thanks for visiting!

  5. I feel like this is the summer of reading slumps?! I've heard a couple other bloggers mention this lately and I myself am going through a MAJOR reading slump! You know I went on a blog break like over a month ago? Well, since then I have read maybe a total of three books!! Nothing is working for me and I was actually hoping that Until Friday Night might pull me out of my slump - but now I'm not so sure...!

    1. YAY! Are you back, Leanna?? I've missed you. I am glad I am not the only one in a reading slump. I hope you enjoy Until Friday Night more than me. I hear it gets better, but I just couldn't get past the annoying comments in the beginning. I was raging. Thanks for visiting and I hope you are having a great summer!
